Why it matters

Explore Városliget and its built heritage in the middle of the city!

What happens

Városliget, a vast public park, has played an essential part in Budapest since its inauguration at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The Millenial exhibition - celebrating the 1000th anniversary of the Hungarian state's foundation - took place in the new green area of the city, one of the first public parks in the world. Városliget has always been the place where contemporary architecture flourished. We tour Vajdahunyad castle, which was initially a wooden building erected for the Millenial exhibition but became so popular that the city of Budapest chose to build a permanent version. We also take a peek at Széchenyi Bath, the neo-baroque wonder of the park, where old Hungarians play chess in the pools of this stately building. Moving on to contemporary architecture, we explore the House of Music Hungary, Sou Fujimoto's enchanting building, which, with its golden leaves, gives the impression of a permanent, lovely autumn day at the park, erasing the boundaries between nature and the built environment. We finish our tour at the recently inaugurated Museum of Ethnography, the award-winning new museum of Budapest.
