Why it matters

Explore the most mysterious spot of the city!

What happens

The old Jewish cemetery of Budapest opened its gates shortly after Buda, Pest, and Old Buda became a single city in 1873. The new burial grounds started to fill up soon, as, during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, Budapest was one of the largest Jewish metropolises in Europe, where they buried thousands of Jews yearly.

The cemetery soon became the necropolis where the wealthiest families buried their loved ones. Their giant mausoleums are the work of the most famous architects of the turn of the 19th century, and they reflect their owners' prestige and wealth even in their ruins. By simply walking through the now-closed, picturesque cemetery, we can explore the rise and fall of Budapest Jewry in the stormy 20th century. We experience the road from integration to catastrophe, from the traditional tombstones, only adorned with Hebrew scriptures, to the vast, richly decorated crypts and finally to the mass grave where the Holocaust victims of the ghetto were buried.

Main sights:

  • Hatvany-Deutsch mausoleum
  • Wolfner-Mauthner mausoleum
